10 Affordable Decor Items Every Home Needs

A flat-lay of affordable decor items

You know that feeling when you walk into someone’s house and it just feels…right? Not necessarily expensive, but warm, intentional, and put together. That’s what I want for you. And sis, you don’t need to blow your budget to make it happen!

According to a recent study by Houzz, 82% of homeowners say decor directly impacts their mood at home. And as someone who once thought throw pillows were “just extra,” I’ve had my fair share of design awakenings 😂. You don’t need a mansion or a makeover show budget. With a few strategic, budget-friendly pieces, your home can feel like that warm hug at the end of a long day.

So let’s get into 10 affordable decor items that will transform your space from “just there” to “ooh wow!, who styled this?”

1. Throw Pillows with Personality

Ahh, throw pillows are my gateway drug to decorating. The first time I swapped out my flat, tired-looking ones with bold prints and textured covers? It instantly lifted my entire living room. I usually mix sizes: a few 18×18” and a lumbar pillow on the sofa. Try Ankara print covers, or neutral linens if that’s more your vibe.

Decor Tip: Buy inserts once, and just switch out the covers as seasons change. It saves money and storage space. For African-inspired throw pillows, I would recommend you try out Wood’s Worth and no, this isn’t sponsored. She’s just that good!

2. Mirrors That Bounce Light

It shocked me the first time I placed a circular mirror opposite my tiny window. The room instantly felt bigger, brighter, more “expensive.” Mirrors are honestly one of the oldest interior design tricks in the book, and they work every time.

3. Baskets for Storage & Style

You see those woven baskets? They’re not just for laundry. I use them to hide books, board games, and random chargers (why do we have so many? 😩). They add warmth and texture to any corner. You can have your local carpenter make you some or get from Ikea.

4. Affordable Art Prints

Listen, I love a good gallery wall—but I’m not about to spend thousands on “originals.” There are SO many websites with downloadable African-inspired prints, botanical sketches, or minimalist art for under ₦5,000. Pop them into IKEA frames, and boom—designer vibes on a budget.

Decor Tip: You can personalize your wall art by designing them in Canva. You could write scriptures or even family pictures, the possibilities are endless. Just be creative.

5. Plants (Real or Fake, No Judgement)

I’ve killed more plants than I care to admit. But the joy I get from walking into a space with a lush Aloe vera or even a cute snake plant? Whew. Plants bring life and colour even if you’re not the gardening type.

Decor Tip: I have a mixture of fake (Monstera) and real plants in my home. You can use fake plants that look real if you don’t have time to take care of them or you travel often.

6. Statement Rugs

I used to skip rugs thinking, “my floor is already tiled.” BIG mistake. Rugs define a space and make it feel cozy and anchored. Go for jute, washable cotton, or layered looks if you’re feeling fancy. I know that quality rugs are expensive but think of it as an investment for your home.

7. Scented Candles or Diffusers

Scent matters, mama. I once entered a home that smelled like fresh vanilla and cedarwood. You better believe I left that place Googling “how to make my house smell like a spa.” 🙂 Candle + diffuser combo? Vibes every time. A friend of mine turned a perfume that she was gifted (which she didn’t like to use on herself anyway) into a home diffuser and it smelled like haven.

8. Wall Hooks or Hanging Racks

Functional and decorative? Say less. I installed wall hooks in my bedroom for bags and keys and instantly felt more organised. Plus, there are cute wooden or brass options that double as wall decor.

9. Books (Styled, Not Just Stacked)

A few coffee table books or even your old faves styled on a shelf with a vase or candle? Super chic. Colour-coordinate them or flip the spines for a minimalist look. I have my children’s bible on my coffee table style with a flower pot on it. It’s not only colourful but functional for prayer time as well.

10. Soft Lighting with Lamps or Fairy Lights

Overhead lights? Too harsh. Table lamps and string lights create that soft, cozy glow that makes everything look better. I got mine on Jumia for next to nothing years ago.

See? Home doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With just a few intentional decor items like throw pillows, mirrors, or a good-smelling candle, you can create a space that looks expensive and feels just right. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the little things make a big impact.
